GETTING AROUND VIEQUES
Once you arrive in Vieques, are going to need to decide how you want to get around the island. Despite being a small island, it is pretty spread out and it is strongly recommended that you rent a car to get to the best beaches and attractions on the island.
What you need to know about renting a car for your trip to Vieques
Book your car as soon as your plans are finalized. It’s very important that you reserve your car rental right away as there are not a lot of rental cars on the island. This is especially important during the high season of December - April.
You cannot take a rental car to Vieques on t)he ferry. If you have a rental car on the main island, you’ll need to either return it before you come to Vieques or leave it on the main island before you head over to Vieques.
A jeep is generally recommended if you plan to visit some of the best beaches in Vieques. All of the rental car companies offer jeeps, however, some also offer other vehicles. Most of the beaches and attractions do not require a jeep to access, but some do (Navio, Play Arenas). If you don’t plan to go to those beaches, a Kia Soul would be fine.
You may need to pick up your car rental the morning after you arrive in Vieques. If you arrive later (after 6 pm), all rental car companies will be closed. Although you can ask if there’s a way to pick your car up after hours, most will not allow you to do so. Pay close attention to when your rental company closes and be prepared to take a taxi to your vacation rental when you arrive, if needed.
There are taxis on Vieques, but no Ubers. There are several taxis on Vieques and they are easy to get at the ferry port or airport. However, if you plan to rely on taxis to get you around the island during your stay, you will need to arrange with them in advance. We recommend Vieques Taxi if you need a taxi.
Rental Car Companies on Vieques
Maritza’s Car Rental
We strongly recommend Maritza’s as it has the newest fleet , best hours of operation and best customer service. They have 2 locations - one closer to the airport and another walking distance from the ferry port in Vieques. They offer complimentary pick up/drop off from the airport.
Check availability online first, but call if it shows no cars available. We have had success in finding a car this way in the past.
Vieques Car Rental
Vieques Car Rental also offers complimentary pick up/drop off within a designated area. Their rentals run from 1 pm day of pick up to 12 pm day of return. So, if you are leaving the island later in the day, you may incur additional rental fees.
Avis Car Rental
Avis Car rental is located between the airport and the ferry terminal. Their business hours are the worst on the island so if you arrive outside of their business hours, you will need to pick your car up the following day. For this reason, we recommend only booking with Avis if their hours line up and/or if there is no other availability.
Coqui Car Rental
Coqui Car Rental is located a short walk from the ferry port. They do not offer complimentary pick up or drop off at the airport. We would only recommend them if there you are unable to find a car rental elsewhere.
