Things to Do
things to do
When you're not relaxing at the pool or one of the many unspoiled beaches on Vieques, you'll have many choices of things to do on the island. A visit to the world's brightest bioluminescent bay is a must do for all visitors plus you'll find a wide variety of additional activities to choose from to make the most of your stay.
Horseback riding through varied terrain, including on the beach, is a great way to see the beautiful island of Vieques. There are 3 companies that offer horseback riding - we recommend Esperanza Riding Company. 787-435-0073
Vieques offers many great snorkeling opportunities for all skill levels. Here are a few locations you may want to try:
LA CHIVA BEACH has several good snorkeling spots. One of our favorite areas is the little Cay off the Beach called Isla Chiva. This area has a soft gorgonian coral forest and an abundance of tropical fish.
PUNTA ARENAS is on Vieques' western tip. It has beautiful turquoise waters and pristine sandy beach areas. Rarely crowded, this spot has some of the most spectacular displays of tropical fish of any snorkeling spot in Vieques.
MOSQUITO PIER is where many of the tours go and it is one of the places you can encounter giant sea turtles. It is protected from the wind and waves and offers great snorkeling. Take the mile long road out to the pier and stop at the first fence line. Enter the water on the left.
Bioluminescent Bays are extremely rare and poorly understood ecological wonders. A fragile ecosystem that is sensitive to environmental conditions, there are few places in the world that classify as Bioluminescent Bays. Puerto Rico has 3 of the 5 in the world, and the Vieques Bio Bay, Puerto Mosquito, has been declared the brightest in the world by Guinness World Records. This is truly a must see on your visit but it is best experienced on cloudy or moonless nights. Check out the video at www.blackbeardsports.com/bio-bay-tours-vieques
Whether you choose to fly fish the flats for the elusive bone fish or tangle with a tarpon, Vieques offers unparalleled fishing adventures. You can fish from shore, rent a kayak, or charter a boat to access some of the best fishing in the Caribbean. To rent a kayak and/or fishing gear try Vieques Adventure Company 787 414-4101. To charter a boat try Fin Time Adventures 787 981-4109.
Plan a day on the water on a chartered sailing or fishing excursion or rent jet skis, paddle boards, kayaks or scuba equipment on your own. There's no shortage of water sports activities available on the island with several companies that offer options to fit every budget and interest.
The Puerto Ferro Lighthouse began operation in 1896. Its role was to guide mariners along the southern coast, during the heyday of shipping sugar and cattle. The lighthouse was abandoned in 1926. This historic building, and beautiful ocean views, are accessible only by foot or bike (about a 1 mile trek).
The Ceiba Tree is one of the most beloved trees in Puerto Rico. Vieques has a very special Ceiba Tree that’s a little over three centuries old. The Ceiba Tree has become sort of a sacred site for locals and one that tourists have come to enjoy.
The fresh fish market is open daily at around 10:30 and features fish caught that morning. It's located just past the ferry dock.
Vieques has some incredible hiking trails for all experience levels. For a family friendly hike, we suggest the Tapon trail located in the National Wildlife Reserve with sweeping views to Caracas Beach.
